The Memorial Candle Program has been designed to help offset the costs associated with the hosting this Tribute Website in perpetuity. Through the lighting of a memorial candle, your thoughtful gesture will be recorded in the Book of Memories and the proceeds will go directly towards helping ensure that the family and friends of Walter Watland can continue to memorialize, re-visit, interact with each other and enhance this tribute for future generations.

Thank you.

Condolence From: Al Lindsey
Condolence: I was able to talk with Walt a couple of weeks ago and say goodbye. As always his faith fortified him. Since he retired about 20 years ago many of his family may not know of his major impact on the safety of our train movements on the former BN and then the BNSF. He pioneered the computerization of Track Warrant Control (TWC) often being the lone advocate for its implementation. TWC is the method used on many parts of the railroad to move trains and if errors are made it can and unfortunately did sometimes result in accidents that resulted in injury and sometimes death. His system allowed us to drastically reduce human errors because the computer prevented “overlaps”. An overlap is when 2 opposing trains are accidently given permission to be on the same track at the same time. We will never know how many lives his system has saved but we know it did. I had the privilege of working with Walt for several years prior to his retirement and I not only enjoyed our work relationship but also our personal relationship when I got to know him and his values. Walt was always a gentleman but, more importantly, he was a good and gentle man.
