Obituary for Edward Gary Schatz

SCHATZ
Edward Gary, age 87, died July 16, 2016 peacefully and unexpectedly, at his home in Maple Grove.

A graduate of St. Louis Park High School (1947), the University of Minnesota (BA 1953), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (MS 1958), and management programs at General Electric and Harvard Business School, Schatz had a distinguished business career. His resume included positions in management and union relations at GE, as an executive vice president at International Dairy Queen, and as the president and CEO of Minnetonka Mills, Inc. After retirement, he volunteered his business skills in developing countries around the world. Schatz was also a veteran of the United States Air Force Reserve during the Korean conflict.

Schatz was a lifelong athlete and outdoorsman. In college he was a boxer, diver, and skier. Later, he was an avid camper, fisherman, golfer, tennis and handball player. He was tremendously happy when standing in a stream in the remote wilds while fly-fishing.

He was full of life, endlessly optimistic, engaging, driven, sharp as a tack, and funny. He was an avid reader, a seeker of knowledge, and an adventurer with a zest for life. His blue eyes sparkled with intrigue and wonder.

He was a much-loved husband, father, and grandfather adored by his extended family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Rita (Hirsch) Schatz; his sister, Marli Blen Klumb; his six children: Philip (Kathleen), Karen Sims, Curt, (Hui), Kristina (Brian), Debbie, and Lisa; his six grandchildren: Madison Sims, Clayton Sims, Greta Schatz, Riley Schatz, Bang Guo Zou, and Kai Lu Sobaski; and multiple nieces, nephews a wide extended family.
