Downs, Charles A. age 83 of St. Francis passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on 9/7/17. Preceded in death by parents and 2 brothers. Survived by loving wife of 57 years, Marie Ann; children, Kathy Pfiffner (Mike), Kevin Downs (Carol), Paul Downs (Jennifer), Lawrence Downs, C. Michael Downs (Kristi); 14 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brother, Larry Downs (Maryanne); sisters, Barbara Miller, Sr. Serena Downs. Visitation at KOZLAK-RADULOVICH NORTHEAST CHAPEL (1918 University Avenue NE) Wednesday, September 13th, 2017 5-8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial at ST. PATRICK CATHOLIC CHURCH (19921 Nightingale St. NW) Thursday, September 14th, 2017 at 11 AM with visitation one hour prior. Interment St. Patrick Cemetery. Memorials preferred to Allina Hospice.

Life Story for Charles Alphonse Downs

Charles was a loving, caring, generous man, devoted husband and father, devout Catholic. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He approached life with curiosity as well as an adventurous and playful abandon.
Charles grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois; He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1952, served in the Navy, and attended Southern Illinois University. Charles was an extremely talented entrepreneur. Owned appliance sales. Started three printing companies and founded MainStreet Designs ca. 1990 before retiring in 2010.
Charles life was filled with a multitude of hobbies. He was extremely talented and excelled at whatever he put his mind to: birdwatching, upland game hunting, fly-fishing, camping, sailing, amateur astronomy, woodworking, jewelry making, fly-rod making & fly-tying, photography, sculpting, carving, cabinet and furniture making, sketching, baking breads and cheesecakes, grilling (from pig snouts to ribs), beekeeping, and craft beer brewing (and drinking!). He loved dogs, but most of all loved to be with family and share his talents and creations with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
