Our Fishing Trip

Jim and I were very close friends for years. It would take a book the size of "War & Peace" if I were to write of all the adventures Jim and I had together. The one story I would like to share is when Jim and I decided to go fishing up at Lake of the Woods.

One of the few weekends we didn't play in the band, we decided to go fishing. We drove up to my parents' cabin on Lake of the Woods at Long Point and got settled in. The lake was rough and choppy, so we decided to take the boat over to Rainy River and fish there. I backed the boat down into the river at the launch site, Jim stayed with the boat while I went up to park the truck and trailer. When I got down to the boat, we both got in but it wouldn't start. It wouldn't even turn over! After trying to figure out what was wrong, we discovered that the battery was missing! We both ran up to the pickup, grabbed some tools and took the battery out of the pickup, carried it down to the dock, and the boat was gone. Because of the current in the river, the boat had floated about a half-mile or so out into the river. In our not-to-sober state, neither of us had bothered to tie the boat to the dock. We had to flag down a passing boat to give us a ride out to the boat and get it towed back to shore. We eventually got the battery into the boat, got out fishing, and caught several walleye. Jim caught a walleye that weighed about 5 pounds. He put it on the stringer, along with the other walleye we had caught, held it up and proceeded to crow about who the best fisherman was. He then threw the stringer full of fish over the side, not hooking it to the boat. Needless to say, we lost all the fish. We knew right then and there, we had better get the boat back onto the trailer, get back to the cabin and do what we did best - drink beer and have a great time together.

As I am writing this, other great memories flood my mind our our great times together. Rest in Peace, my dear friend, I will aways cherish our friendship.
